You can now take your Virginia driver improvement class either online or offline in a classroom. I have no idea why you’d want to spend hours of your life in a classroom being lectured at, so I’m only going to discuss the available online options. While it’s great you can take the classes online, there’s one little tiny problem.
The state of Virginia has approved nearly 100 online traffic schools which can be used to complete your driver improvement requirements. It’s always great to have options, but just because a school is “certified” or “approved” doesn’t mean you’re getting the best deal or signing up for a quality course. Far from it, I’m afraid.
With 100 schools to pick from, how in the world are you supposed to know which one has the best course and the cheapest price? Well, you’re in luck! While I was in the middle of creating this website, I saw how many really bad online traffic schools are out there and decided to solve that problem by reviewing the schools for everyone. Nobody else was doing it, so why not?
Online Virginia Driver Improvement Class Recommendations
If you’ve decided to take your Virginia driver improvement class online, I’ve supplied you with a full list of approved courses below. But first, I wanted to give you my recommendations. There are close to 100 certified driver improvement classes in Virginia. That’s insane! Unfortunately, quality is not a pre-requisite to becoming certified because most of them are total garbage. If you visit some of the websites I posted in the full list, that fact becomes pretty obvious pretty quickly.
Admittedly, I haven’t reviewed every certified Virginia driver improvement class, but these recommendations below are excellent schools and I’ve supplied links so you can read detailed reviews of each. I’ve also supplied you with some discouint codes and discount links.
In my opinion, the best Virginia driver improvement class that you can take online is the Improv Traffic School course, so I’ll start with them.
Review #1: Improv Traffic School
Improv Traffic School is easily my favorite online Virginia driver improvement class. A bunch of comedians from Hollywood got together and decided to create a traffic school that is fun and humorous. They did a pretty good job – got me to laugh! I’m not going to claim this turns your traffic school requirement into a jolly old time, but it does make things a bit more bearable.
I also like the fact they’ve been in business for more than a decade, the money-back guarantee, and last but not least, there are no hidden fees at the end.
Online traffic schools are notorious for tacking on additional “fees” at the end. With this school, what you see is what you get. As a final bonus, you’ll get free tickets to one of their comedy clubs. Needless to say, this school earns my top recommendation.
It’s important to note, however, that my sense of humor is a little twisted. Check out the below commercial this school made. If you don’t at least find this mildly amusing, you should probably pass on this school and check out my next recommendation.

Review #2: iDriveSafely
If you aim to take your Virginia driver improvement class a bit more seriously, that’s no problem at all. iDriveSafely was actually the #1 recommended school for the state of Virginia for 2 straight years (2011 and 2012) and was only recently bumped down to my second recommendation. The only reason for that is because I’m a sucker for humor so the Improv course took the top spot.
Otherwise, iDriveSafely is a great course to go with. More than 4,000,000 people have completed their course in the 12 years they’ve been in business. They’ve also kept an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
The reason I recommend them is because the price is cheap and the quality of the course is high. They include some graphics, animations, and video to spruce things up a bit and you can also get the optional “read along” feature. They’ve got a money-back guarantee, 24/7 customer service through phone, live chat, or email, and is the largest and most well-established course you can sign up for.
Review #3: Go To Traffic School
GoToTrafficSchool guarantees to be the cheapest Virginia driver improvement class on the web. If all you really care about is price, this is the school for you. Sure, you’ll forgo some of the extra’s like 3D animations and high quality videos, but in return you get a cheaper price. Even with the cheaper price, you still get 24/7 live customer support via phone, chat, or email and you’re still going with a company that has been around for more than a decade with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. So while this one isn’t going to be as high quality as my first two recommendations, it’s your best choice if you want to pay the cheapest possible price to fulfill your Virginia driver improvement class requirements.

Full List Of Certified Virginia Driver Improvement Classes
If you sign up for an online Virginia driver improvement class from the list below, please do your research. My above recommended schools are excellent options but I can’t vouch for any of these schools below. As a matter of fact, most of them look awful! Yes, they are state certified and yes, they are legitimate companies running these schools. But that’s where it ends. Many of them have customer service which is nearly non-existent while others are overpriced and have terrible usability and quality. If you want to shop around, though, here are the nearly 100 online traffic schools you can go through.
By the way, this list was taken directly from the Virginia DMV Website. The Virginia DMV aparently doesn’t care about the list of approved schools, because a large number of their links were broken or went to the wrong websites. I took the liberty to clean it all up for ya and I won’t even take any of your tax dollars for doing it!
VA Online Driver Improvement Course FAQs
What are the reasons for taking a driver improvement course?
There are many reasons why drivers take a driver improvement course in Virginia. These are:
- The Court has issued you a notice for a possible license suspension after accumulating too many points on your driving record.
- The DMV ordered you to complete one after receiving a traffic ticket.
- You can earn Safe Driver Points.
- You’re looking for an insurance discount.
- You need it for Fleet training or other job employment needs.
What are VA’s Safe Driver Points?
You can use your Safe Driver Points to dismiss traffic points in case you earn some in the future.
How to get Safe Driver Points?
Every full calendar year, a Virginia driver who didn’t commit any violation or suspension gets one safe driving point assigned to their driving record. These are usually awarded every April. And, you can earn five annual driving points max.
If you complete a driver Improvement course voluntarily (meaning you did not receive a court or DMV order to take it), you may earn five safe driving points.
If you take the course as a requirement, the court will determine if you will be given safe driving points or not. You’ll need to submit documentation that the court has permitted you to get points to the driver improvement clinic you will be attending before DMV can award you the points.
How many times can I take a driver improvement course in Virginia?
You can take the course for supplemental learning anytime, especially online classes.
The same goes if you receive a court or DMV order to complete the course for ticket dismissal or removal. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the course.
However, if you are taking it for points reduction or to get five safe driving points, you can only do so every 2 years.
