If you’re searching for the best online traffic schools in 2020, chances are you’re not signing up for one by choice. You either have to clear up a traffic ticket, need to lower your insurance rates, or need to remove some points from your driving record. If you really are taking an online traffic school by choice, just because you want to, that’s great! But please take your meds. That’s not normal.
I’m a certified driving instructor, but even I know that nobody actually likes to take traffic school. It’s boring, you’re essentially forced to do it, it costs money, and nobody really believes it will make them a safer driver. It just feels like a punishment more than anything.

Why Online Traffic School Is Better Than A Classroom
Fortunately, these days you don’t need to take your traffic school course in an actual classroom. Some of us remember wasting 6 hours or more in a stuffy classroom surrounded by strangers while being lectured at by a driving instructor. As a driving instructor myself, let me tell you, most of the instructors don’t even want to be there. Even teaching traffic school classes is terrible.
But alas, we are in the 21st century. The age of the Internet, where we can take our traffic school course online while sitting in our underwear on our couch in front of the TV (although you can wear pants if you really want to). You can take it on your own schedule, on your own time, and if you need to use the bathroom you don’t have to raise your hand and ask permission. Heck, you can take your entire traffic school from your phone now.
I’m not saying online traffic school is a fun or exciting way to spend an afternoon, but what I am saying is that taking your required traffic school course online is much more tolerable. That’s unfortunately about the best you can hope for.
So, make sure you scroll down to see a list of the best online traffic schools in 2020. As long as you go with one of the below online traffic schools, you’ll be in good shape.
The 5 Best Online Traffic Schools For 2020
With all of this in mind, there is still one problem – who has the time to comb through all the options out there and really find the best online traffic schools? Just the state of California alone has over 1,000 state-certified online traffic schools. I’ll spare you the details on how that happened, but obviously it’s impossible to know which of those thousands to go with.
Most people are too busy to bother with it, which is why I’ve taken the time to handle the process for you and narrow down the selections to just a few programs I think are worth looking at. I’ve been writing these online traffic school reviews for about 10 years now, so I know what to look for.
These 5 programs below really are the best online traffic schools that you can pick from. They offer a good combination of convenience, affordability, and they are the easiest ones out there. These online traffic schools are also certified in most states, but they will verify your eligibility before you sign up.
My recommendation is to just check each one of these courses out and decide between them. You can’t go wrong with any of these courses. These reviews are updated as of 2020.
Please note that the online traffic school reviews below are for ticket dismissal, insurance discount, and driving point reduction purposes only.

#1 TOP PICK FOR 2020: iDriveSafely
iDriveSafely is my pick for the cream of the crop when it comes to the best online traffic schools of 2020. This online traffic school is approved in most states that allow it (they will verify your eligibility) and they have existed for a couple of decades now. They actually got their start by offering booklet based traffic school programs so that people could take traffic school from home. In the late ’90s, they began offering online-based traffic school programs. Here we are in 2020 and they offer their online traffic school course on just about any device. You can take the course anytime, from anywhere, and they offer a variety of formats depending on how you want to receive the information.
There are plenty of reasons for giving iDriveSafely the top rating for 2020, but let’s look at just a few of the main things that help it stand out.
- iDriveSafely offers ’round the clock, 24/7 support. No matter when you’re trying to complete your education, there’s a team there to help when you need them. The best option, of course, is to never have to use customer service at all, but if you need them, iDriveSafelyis ready for your call 24/7/365.
- Unlike some options, iDriveSafely works well on any device. Many online traffic schools in 2020 still function really poorly on tablets and smartphones. iDriveSafely can be used on any device and even switching between devices is no problem.
- It offers several different types of programs so that no matter what you’re looking for, you can find the required online driving course that works for you. Not only that, but you can choose between different content delivery formats such as text-only or video-only courses.
iDriveSafely has been my #1 recommendation for almost 10 years running and 2020 is no different. In those 10 years, I can count on one hand how many complaints I’ve received about them. It’s fast, easy, cheap, and certified just about everywhere. What else could you really want? If you want to learn more, check out this more detailed iDriveSafely review.
Pick #2: Aceable
Aceable is more than just an online traffic school course. They actually got their start just a few years ago as the most modern online driver’s education course. This startup company based out of Austin, Texas dumped $5,000,000 into creating the most modern and mobile-friendly program available. While they started out offering online driver’s ed courses, they expanded into offering online traffic schools in 2018 and they have not disappointed!
Aceable has a dedicated mobile app for each individual device that offers your online traffic school across any platform (or your desktop/laptop if you choose). The reason I love this program? It provides fast-paced, interactive lessons instead of the standard boring lectures that other classes may provide. You get to learn quickly and in a more fun, interactive setting. By the end of it, you’ll love their mascot Ace, trust me! Plus, it offers all the standards you would expect:
- Reliable support based out of their office in Austin, Texas. They have a variety of ways to contact them from traditional phone support to even getting support through their social media accounts. These guys keep up with the times.
- While they are not approved in all states for traffic school purposes, they have the big ones covered and they are expanding very quickly!
- This is the single most modern online traffic school that exists on the market in 2020. This is the newest course available and it works nearly flawlessly on any device.
- You’re also helping a start-up business in Texas, so if you live in the state of Texas and want to help out an awesome expanding business in your home state you have a bit of an additional incentive.
Since last year, Aceable has continued to make improvements to their course, more specifically their video content. They keep adding some really cool 3D videos where you can look around 360 degrees. They are also continuing to get certified in more states, so check them out to see if your state was added. You can learn more about Aceable in this detailed review.
Pick #3: Go To Traffic School
Go To Traffic School was just added to this list in the last year. Prior to 2019, Go To Traffic School felt like a really outdated course. Well, ok, it WAS a really outdated course. The course content was obviously 10+ years old and it didn’t work well on mobile devices.
Fortunately, they’ve spent a ton of time updating their course content. Most notably, they have fresh new videos that are very modern and even interactive, requiring user input, which helps students retain information and remember the most important stuff. They also improved how the course functions on smartphones and tablets.
The biggest advantage of Go To Traffic School was always that they guarantee to be the cheapest, but the course itself left a bit to be desired. Now, you get the best of both worlds. So, if you’re on a budget but still want a legit online traffic school that is approved in many states, Go To Traffic School may be the best option in 2020.
I received no complaints about Go To Traffic School last year and I strongly thought about moving them up on this list for 2020. I ultimately decided to keep them in the #3 spot, but this online traffic school is a real competitor after their massive overhaul. Check out a more detailed review of these guys here.
Pick #4: Improv Traffic School
Improv Traffic School might actually be my personal favorite. We all know online traffic school is boring. That’s one of the biggest problems with it. That’s why the folks at the Improv Comedy Club chain decided to create their own comedy based online traffic school.
Actually, Improv Traffic School existed before they even had online courses. In the past, they would put stand-up comedians in a classroom and teach traffic school that way. These days, you can watch the comedians online from your own home!
Not everyone is into the same type of slap-stick style comedy that I am, but if you have an easy sense of humor, this could make your online traffic school much less painful. Another thing that makes Improv Traffic School less painful is how they are the fastest course allowed by state law. In some places, like California, they don’t even have a course timer. I’ve heard of people getting the entire course done in under 2 hours when it is supposed to take 6.
Improv Traffic School hasn’t changed anything from last year, but it is still one of the best online traffic schools for 2020. Nothing really needed to be changed. In fact, many online traffic schools reduced their customer service hours, but Improv Traffic School is one of the few that still maintains a 24/7/365 customer support team. Check out more about them in my full Improv Traffic School review.
Pick #5: DriversEd.com
New to this list in 2020 is DriversEd.com. While they are new to this list, they certainly aren’t a new online traffic school. This online traffic school was one of the very first to ever exist and they have had millions of students go through their course.
One reason I didn’t include DriversEd.com on this list until 2020 is because it was starting to get very outdated. It’s not that the course content itself was outdated, it just started to feel outdated. For example, videos would play in a little square box instead of playing in the normal ratio that we are used to watching. The graphics on the animations also looked outdated. However, DriversEd.com is in the midst of making some great new improvements. Depending on the improvements they make throughout this year, I may need to move them higher.
They also improved how well it runs on phones and tablets. Prior to 2020, you took the course through your phone’s browser. You still have that option, but they also added a downloadable app that you can use. This makes the course run much faster and just feels more responsive.
How Online Traffic Schools Are Changing In 2020
So here we are in 2020. Have online traffic schools really changed that much from last year?
Online traffic schools haven’t changed all that much from last year. Each year, schools will typically gain approval in additional states or make minor updates to their course material, but overall, there are no significant changes that happened.
One thing to keep an eye on is some changes that may be coming in the state of California in 2020. The state of California has literally thousands of state-approved online traffic schools, which obviously isn’t sustainable. California is looking for ways to reduce that number drastically.
As usual, The best online traffic schools in 2020 will offer a variety of ways to take the course depending on your preference (text, video, or a combination of both). They should also deliver the information in entertaining and clear ways so that you can retain the information with ease and pass the required tests quickly. They should also provide high-quality customer service which most online traffic schools lack.
In short, finding the best online traffic schools is something that is well worth doing as it can save you money, time, and hassle (time being the most important to me!).
Knowing What To Look For In An Online Traffic School In 2020
There are numerous options when you begin breaking down what the best online traffic schools have to offer. But above all else, you need to know exactly what it is that you need and then see which schools offer that to you.
For example, do you need to simply reduce driving points on your driving record? Or perhaps you need to take a course due to being arrested for driving under the influence? Most likely, you recently received a ticket and just want to get that single ticket removed from your record.
The most important thing to look for is state certification. DO NOT sign up for an online traffic school that isn’t certified in your state. Some online traffic schools use ambiguous language to sucker in people who are in states a course isn’t even certified for. Most online traffic schools in 2020 will verify your eligibility and all the online traffic schools I recommend do check for this. Just make sure you also verify it yourself.
Additionally, what is important for you to learn well? Structured lessons often use things like videos, text materials, and more. Do you need to be able to contact someone regularly if you have questions or concerns? Most online traffic schools in 2020 offer both video and text-based courses. If you just want to get your traffic school course done as fast as possible, and you live in a state without course timers such as California, sign up for the no-frills text-based courses. You’ll get it done the fastest that way.
On the other hand, if you live in a state that DOES have course timers, such as the state of Texas, feel free to use the video-based online traffic schools. Course timers require you to spend a required amount of time on the program, so if your course is a 6-hour defensive driving course, for example, it’ll take you a minimum of 6 hours to complete whether you sign up for the text or the video-based course. Might as well watch some videos if that’s how you’d prefer the material to be delivered. It’s usually a bit more entertaining, but it can also be a little more expensive.
The key to finding the best online traffic schools is to know what you need from a school and then match up your needs with what it offers. If you’ll keep this in mind, you should be able to find the right one for your needs based simply on the online traffic schools I’ve recommended to you.
