How to Renew Your Driver’s License in New York

In New York, you can renew your driver’s license in 3 ways:

  • Online
  • By Mail
  • In Person

Let’s walk you through each method.

How to Renew A New York Driver’s License Online

Who doesn’t want to do their license renewal online?

It’s just so convenient!

However, to take part in online renewal, you first need to be eligible.

  • You are NOT upgrading your license to an enhanced or REAL ID-compliance license
  • Your driving privileges are active (not suspended or revoked)
  • Your license has not expired for more than 2 years
  • You don’t have a CDL

If you check off all three, then online renewal is possible for you.

Here are the steps:

  1. Pass an eye test from an approved provider

NOTE: Alternatively, you can go to a medical professional and have them fill out a copy of the Vision Test Report. You can also take an online vision test

  1. Prepare the following:
    1. Your driver’s license
    2. Your Social Security Number
    3. A credit or debit card
    4. Vision test results
  1. Go to the NY DMV’s online portal for license renewals
  1. Follow the prompts on the screen.
  1. Pay the renewal fee through a credit/debit card:
    1. Standard license – $64.50
    2. Enhanced license – $94.50

NOTE: If you live in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD), the renewal fee is $80.50 (+ $30 if it is an enhanced license). The MCTD includes the following counties:

  • Bronx
  • Kings (Brooklyn)
  • New York (Manhattan)
  • Queens
  • Richmond (Staten Island)
  • Dutchess
  • Nassau
  • Orange
  • Putnam
  • Rockland
  • Suffolk
  • Westchester
  1. Print a copy of your temporary license. Your new one will arrive by mail.

How convenient was that?

How to Renew A New York Driver’s License By Mail

If you’re not comfortable with online transactions, don’t worry.

Another option is to renew by mail.

Here are the steps:

  1. Fill out the renewal notice sent by the NY DMV.

NOTE: If you didn’t get yours, use the MV44 form instead (Application for Permit, Driver License, or Non-Driver ID Card)

  1. Pass an eye test with a vision registry provider OR have a certified physician complete the Vision Test Report OR do it online
  1. Enclose a check or money order payable to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles:
    1. Standard license – $64.50
    2. Enhanced license – $94.50

NOTE: The amount varies depending on where you live. If you’re within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD), you must pay $80.50 (+ $30 if it is an enhanced license).

  1. Send everything to this address:

NYS Department of Motor Vehicles

207 Genesee Street, Suite 6

Utica, NY 13501-2874

  1. Wait for your new license to arrive via mail.

Remember, you don’t get a temporary license when you renew by mail. If you’re opting for this method, make sure to do it ahead of time. Otherwise, you may have to stop driving until your new license arrives.

How to Renew A New York Driver’s License In-Person

Even though online and mail renewal are the preferred methods, there are times when you can’t avoid in-person renewal.

These situations are when:

  • You want to convert your Standard license to a REAL-ID or Enhanced driver’s license.
  • You want to change your license class.
  • Your license has restrictions.
  • The DMV marked your license as ‘Valid Without Photo’.
  • The DMV needs an updated photo.
  • The DMV installed an ignition interlock device on your vehicle.
  • Your driver’s license has a ‘Temporary Visitor’ written on it and has expired. You must provide proof of extension from the Department of Homeland Security.

If that’s the case for you, follow these steps:

  1. Visit a DMV office near you. Before going, it’s best to check their offered services and see whether you need to make an online appointment.
  1. Bring a completed form MV44, your current license, and any necessary documents (for license upgrade).
  1. Pass a vision test.

NOTE: Alternatively, you can do the following:

  1. Pay the renewal fee using a check, money order, or card:
    1. Standard license – $64.50
    2. Enhanced license – $94.50
    3. MTCD areas – $80.50
    4. MTCD areas with Enhanced license – $110.50
  1. Receive a temporary license, which remains valid for 60 days. Your new one will arrive by mail in around 10 business days.

And there you have it.

It’s not as complicated as you might think.
