Are you ready to head into the DMV to take your driving test? In order to get your drivers permit or license in California, you will need to pass a written exam. These free California DMV practice tests will help you to prepare.

The questions for these tests have been taken from two main sources. The first is the California DMV drivers handbook and the second is from past California DMV driver’s licenses tests.

That means, in these practice tests, you’ll get actual questions from actual California DMV tests that have been given in the past.

Some of the questions will still be on the tests to this day while others may be modified.

How Do I Get A California Driver’s Permit?

Here are the requirements to obtain a California driver’s permit:

  • You must provide the appropriate birth date/legal presence documents.
  • You must present your social security number.
  • You must have your fingerprint and photograph taken.
  • You must pay the application fee.
  • You must pass the California driving laws test.

Note that if you are under eighteen years old, you must also have written approval from one or both of your parents or legal guardians.

How Old Do I Have to Be to Get My California Permit?

You can apply for your driver’s permit in California as soon as you are fifteen and a half years old. 

Take note though that if you are younger than seventeen and a half years old when you apply for the permit, you will be required to complete a driver’s education program.

What Tests Do I Need to Pass to Get My California Permit?

These are the tests that you need to pass to obtain your California driver’s permit:

  • Vision Test. This can be taken with or without corrective lenses. 
  • Written Test. This covers California driving laws and everything in the California Driver’s Manual. You can download the 2023 edition here.
  • Behind-the-Wheel Driving Test. This will require an appointment because no exams are given after 4:30 pm to ensure that applicants have enough time to finish their tests.

How Many Questions Are on the California Permit Test?

The California DMV written exam will contain a total of 46 questions.

The topics covered includes:

  • California traffic laws
  • Road signs
  • Safe driving practices

Meanwhile, for the driving test, you will be required to locate and use your vehicle’s controls correctly. This includes:

  • Parking brake
  • Headlights
  • Windshield wipers
  • Emergency flashers
  • Defrosters

You need to answer at least 38 questions correctly in the written test to pass the exam.

Meanwhile, it is up to the discretion of the test administrator to determine whether you pass or fail the driving test.

If you fail either one of the two sections, you will need to retake the test. The application fee you paid allows you to take both driving tests up to three times within a year. 

If you fail all three attempts, or if for some reason you were not able to retake the tests within a year, you’ll need to start the application process again and pay another application fee.

So you might want to take advantage of these free resources. You can also download the California Driver’s Handbook for free, which covers almost every topic in the written test.

Driver’s education courses are also recommended even if it’s only mandatory for applicants who are younger than seventeen and a half years. Most online driver’s ed provides exam preparation kits to help you ace your exams.
