Want The Fast Answer? THIS Is My Top Choice For Taking Drivers Ed Online

The 7 Best Online Drivers Ed Courses For Teens

Taking drivers ed online might seem like a foreign concept to those of us who are old enough to have teenagers, but believe it or not, taking drivers training online is actually a great way to go. As a driving instructor, I quickly saw the power of online drivers education while creating truck driver training programs for professional drivers. Even us adults seem to retain information better when going through online training.

For teens, it’s second nature. While all teens learn differently, taking drivers ed online is almost like second nature to most of them. It’s interactive, they can go at their own pace, and retention rates are generally much higher than taking drivers ed in a classroom. So, without further delay, here are my top 7 choices for the best online drivers ed courses.

#1: Online Drivers Ed Course

No doubt, is one of the best online drivers ed courses courses to sign up for if you plan to take drivers ed online. What I really like about is how the course is organized. It’s as if they have some sort of mind-reading device that can tell when the course starts to get boring. As soon as I started getting bored, they would change it up by having me play a game, watch a video, animation, or even make virtual driving decisions. Really creative how this course is put together. is the first (or very close to it) online drivers ed course to have ever existed. They started about 20 years ago and even before then, they offered other home-based drivers ed options. Point is, this is about the most established and longest-running drivers ed course online. With literally millions of students having graduated their courses, you can be 100% certain they are totally legit.

They also offer some nice benefits such as 24/7/365 customer support via phone, chat, and email. The course works well on all devices and it was updated a couple of years ago to include 3D graphics, fun animations, and some interactive features to make the course material a bit easier to retain. has a money-back guarantee and can even provide you with behind the wheel training in some areas. All in all, has just about everything going for it.

#2: Aceable Online Drivers Ed

Aceable Best Online Drivers Ed Course

Ever since they first launched, Aceable has been a top choice for taking drivers ed online for a few years now. This is a company that saw some improvements that could be made in the industry, so after acquiring more than $4,000,000 in funding, they created what is now the absolute best online drivers ed course available.

Sure, it’s nice that FINALLY a more modern version of online drivers ed was created with video, a fun mascot, graphics, interactive features, etc. It’s also nice that they create dedicated versions for all devices so that the course works perfectly on any phone, computer, tablet, or just about any other device you can think of. And of course, it’s great that they provide REAL customer support via phone, email, and even ways teens like to communicate such as through Facebook and other social media platforms. But what I really like is how they go above and beyond. If you look at their social media accounts, you’ll be greeted with contests, fun activities, and ways for students to interact. Aceable frequently gives out prizes, they make a big congratulatory deal out of passing the course, and students give them rave reviews.

This is also the absolute best online drivers ed course for those that wish to take all or some of the course from a mobile device. Aceable is the only online teen drivers ed course that I know of who has dedicated apps. No other online drivers ed course comes close to working on mobile devices better than Aceable. So, if you plan on using a phone or tablet to complete your drivers ed coursework, you definitely need to consider these guys.

What I’m trying to say is, if I personally had to enroll my child into an online drivers ed course today, my top choice as a certified driving instructor myself is hands down Aceable. I might be going a bit overboard in my recommendation for them, but really, they are that good and they offer a money-back guarantee anyway, so they are worth at least checking out.

#3: Improv Driving School

Improv Traffic School Online Drivers Ed

Improv Driving School is one of my favorite drivers ed online courses because they are really unique. If you’ve ever heard of the nationwide Improv Comedy Club chain, then you know who is behind Improv Driving School. That’s right, Improv Driving School was created by comedians, which means this is a COMEDY based driving school!

Let me tell you, humor really helps make the material a lot easier to learn. In general, memorizing driving laws, stats, and facts isn’t exactly exciting. Improv Driving School recognized that and hired some of their stand-up comedians to put together an absolutely hilarious driving school online. Of all the drivers ed online programs I’ve ever reviewed or gone through, this is the most entertaining option.

Just like any other high quality drivers ed course you can take online, Improv Traffic School offers the ability to take the course from any device, they have good response times for customer support, they have existed for a very long time (at least 15 years), and they receive excellent feedback from students. The only real negative about this course is they are not certified in very many states. You can click here to check if your state is covered. Check out the video below to see some of the humor they use.

#4: iDriveSafely

iDriveSafely Online Drivers Ed Course

iDriveSafely is another online drivers ed course that has been around for literally decades. This is a very experienced online drivers ed course provider with millions of students having graduated their courses. They are certified in several different states and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

What I personally like about this online drivers ed course is the animated cast of characters you interact with throughout the course. From the grumpy old car air freshener to the hula girl on the dashboard, the animated characters is what makes this course. Instead of just sitting through boring videos and reading plain text, iDriveSafely set up the course to be entertaining. As you progress through the program, you’ll go through a storyline with your animated friends. By the end of it, you’ll be sad to see them go!

iDriveSafely works well on mobile devices so if you plan on taking the course from your phone, there’s no problem there. They also have U.S. based customer support available 7 days per week and they have extended customer support hours as well. Parents will like the parent resources and guides provided which many other online drivers ed courses don’t have. If you’d like to learn more, check out this more detailed review of iDriveSafely.

#5: First Time Driver

First Time Driver Online Drivers Ed Course

First Time Driver is owned and operated by the American Safey Counsil. They launched their online drivers ed course way back in 1999, so they now have more than 2 decades of experience. During that time, the course has seen many updates and complete overhauls in order to keep the course fresh and modern.

I personally found this course to be a bit more boring than some of the other options here, but this is still a legit course run by a legit organization that has been around for a very long time and their online reviews are very positive. First Time Driver does not have a mobile app, but they have optimized the course to work well no matter which device you use. You can switch between devices anytime and go at your own pace. They will keep track of your progress for you.

First Time Driver also tends to be priced on the lower end, so if you’re looking to save a few bucks but still want to go with a popular and recommended course, this is a program you should definitely look into. Another advantage is their 24/7/365 customer support. Most online drivers ed courses have 7 day per week support, but very few offer that support 24hrs per day.

DMVedu Online Drivers Ed has been around for about 10 years now and have established itself as a major player in the online drivers education industry. They have approval in several states and have maintained a very good online reputation. This online drivers ed course tends to be on the cheaper side, so this is another good course to look into if you want to save a few bucks.

This online drivers ed course is best for those who prefer to read text rather than watch videos. This is a very text-heavy online drivers ed course and can get a bit boring. However, not all students like to learn through videos or interactive games. Some just like to read the information, take notes, and study that way. If you’re the type of student that tends to just get distracted and doze off during videos, this may be a better alternative for you.

Even though DmvEdu looks a bit outdated, the course content is continuously updated to make sure you’re getting all the information you need to know to pass the written driving exam as it stands this year. This course is also mobile friendly, although I think there are some better options listed above if you plan on taking your course from a phone or tablet.

So while this might not be my first choice online drivers ed course, if you prefer to learn mostly through reading, is an option you should at least consider.

#7: Teen Driving Course

Teen Driving Course Online Drivers Ed

Teen Driving Course has been around for a very long time. They started back in the 1990’s by offering “home study” programs for teen drivers. These programs included sending workbooks and VHS tapes through the mail that students could watch and complete from home, then send everything back to be graded. Fortunately, these days there is no need to deal with workbooks or sending anything through the mail. In the late 1990’s, they were able to get their online drivers ed course approved for online course study.

Obviously Teen Driving Course has been updated quite a bit since they first launched. In fact, just a couple years ago this course was fully updated from the ground up. They made it one of the most mobile-friendly courses around, and I personally think this is one of the easiest online drivers ed courses to pass. The quizzes and tests are ridiculously easy. This is also the fastest online drivers ed course allowed by state law.

With that much experience and millions of graduates from their programs, they must be doing something right. Another great advantage of Teen Driving Coruse is their “pay later” feature. This is better than a moneyback guarantee. You can actually sign up for the course and start taking it for free, without any payment information at all! Don’t like it? Just take your business elsewhere as there is no need to request a refund.

Beware Of Poor Quality Online Drivers Ed Courses

While the top 7 courses I listed are my favorite drivers ed online programs to recommend to teens and parents, there are MANY other options available. I obviously don’t have time to review them all, but I very highly recommend you pick from one of the 3 online driving schools I listed. While other good options might be available, the unfortunate truth is the majority of courses that offer drivers ed online are getting really outdated with almost no effort whatsoever to improve them. Customer service is poor, glitches happen frequently locking teens out of the course, and worst of all they all pretty much cost the same. Do not sign up for a low quality drivers ed course when just about all drivers ed courses online cost approximately the same.

What About Taking Drivers Ed In A Classroom?

I almost always recommend parents sign their teen up for drivers ed online. It’s faster, easier, more information is retained, students can go through the course independently and learn on their own time, and I think most teens much prefer it over being lectured to in a classroom, making posters, and watching poorly made fear videos about the dangers of driving. For some subjects, learning online doesn’t work well, but as driving students prepare to take their written driving exams, I personally believe taking a driving course online is the best way to go. That, combined with their behind the wheel training, will make them more prepared to be a safer driver.

With that said, all students learn differently. I think teens should be able to make their own choice and choose which option is best for them. Taking drivers ed online isn’t for everyone and some students really do better with a face-to-face classroom environment with an instructor at the ready to answer any questions that come up. So, just have an honest discussion about it, but if your teen chooses to take drivers ed online, I wouldn’t worry one bit about that.

Some Final Thoughts About Using Online Drivers Ed Courses

A lot of teens (and parents) initially have this vision that taking drivers ed online will be super easy and a “blowoff” type of class. I’d like to reassure parents and warn teens that this is not the case. Taking drivers ed online is something that is timed, with quizzes after each section, and a final exam that must be passed. Students must learn about the rules of the road, types of roadway signs, right-of-way laws, stats about the dangers of driving, how distracted driving or drunk/drugged driving impacts our safety to society, and all sorts of things that must be memorized. This isn’t going to be a walk in the park, and rest assured, students will learn quite a bit going through drivers ed online. It’s all part of the right-of-passage for teens and this is how we’re doing it in our technological age. So have fun, be prepared to learn!
