Several years ago, adults over the age of 18 had no drivers ed requirements. They just took a test at the DMV and got their license. Well, times have changed, and an adult driver ed course is an additional requirement now in many states.
Fortunately, in most states where adult drivers ed is required, you only need to complete a shortened online course. Many times these courses are only a few hours long (depends on your state). Once you complete the course, you go take a written test, driving test, then get your license. No classrooms, no driving instructors (unless you choose to get one), and no graduated drivers licenses like 16-year-olds deal with.

This Is The Best Online Adult Drivers Ed Course In 2023
Is Taking Drivers Ed Online Better Than A Classroom?
As a driving instructor, I often get asked if online drivers ed is legit. I am absolutely in favor of most students taking their drivers ed coursework online.
Every student learns differently, so for some of you, a classroom really would be better. However, you don’t really learn how to drive in the classroom. Instead, that is where you learn some of the more boring information such as various traffic laws, the different types of roadsigns, school bus laws, and other things you’ll need to memorize. While important, learning this mundane information is not something that is learned well in a classroom for most students.
Online adult drivers ed courses are able to deliver the course material in an interactive way that helps students retain the information much better. Most of these courses have you play games or interact with virtual objects to get you to easily memorize boring information. You just can’t do that in a classroom.
The more worrying aspect of adult drivers ed is the lack of driving practice requirements. You will likely need to pass a driving test, so make sure you have enough practice with a licensed adult before you take the test.
2023’s Best Adult Drivers Ed Courses Online
The list of online drivers ed courses below has been updated for 2023. Every year I like to go through the most popular online driver’s ed courses, including adult drivers ed, to determine the best course. My 2023 rankings are as follows:
Listed below, you will find more detailed reviews and discounts for these courses.
#1: Aceable
One of the best adult drivers ed courses online is Aceable. Please note that the classes available for people 18-years of age and older are only offered in Texas, California, and Illinois.
More than 1,000,000 students have chosen Aceable in just the past 4 years, and they have given the company a 4.9 out of 5-stars rating on most review sites like Yelp, the Apple Store, TrustPilot, and other review sites.
If you’re planning on taking your drivers ed course from a phone or tablet, Aceable is without a doubt your best option. All of the online drivers ed courses listed here will give you the option to take it from your phone, but Aceable is the only online driving school that offers a downloadable app. By being able to take the course from an app, it makes things run so much smoother.
Aceable was given the #1 spot as soon as they launched 4 years ago, and the same is true in 2023. These guys continue to improve the course content so it just keeps getting better and better. If I had to recommend just one adult drivers ed course that you could take online, it would no doubt be Aceable. If you want to know more about them, check out my more detailed Aceable review.

#2: DriversEd.com
DriversEd.com is a fantastic option for adults to complete their drivers ed requirements. They have a wide selection of classes available to residents in most states. By completing this course, it is also possible to get a discount from your insurance provider of up to 20-percent.
DriversEd.com has over 25-years of experience in the industry, and in that period, they have amassed a wealth of knowledge to create innovative techniques that help their students learn the material. For example, they have a feature with 3D video animations. Those animations feature driving simulations that pose hazards and threats. You then need to decide the best course of action. I haven’t seen anything else like that in any other course.
They are the only driving school that is approved by both the Road Safety Educators’ Association and accredited by the Driving School Association of the Americas. They receive 10’s of thousands of positive reviews on user verified sites like TrustPilot.
DriversEd.com has extended customer service hours. They used to have 24/7/365 customer service, but as of 2023, they no longer offer 24/7 support. Their site says live chat is available Monday – Friday, but no hours are listed. There is also a phone number available, but those hours aren’t listed either. Fortunately, my experience with DriversEd.com has been positive, but I do wish they kept their 24/7/365 customer service hours. Having trouble deciding between these first two options? #3: Improv Traffic School
Another one of my personal favorites is Improv Traffic School. They are currently certified in the states of Nevada, California, Florida, Indiana, Georgia, and Kentucky. These guys have been around since before online driving schools even existed, so they have experience and literally millions of satisfied customers.
Improv Traffic School took an entirely different approach to online drivers ed by using what they call “edutainment”. In other words, they want to entertain you as you go through your drivers ed coursework.
The way they accomplished this is by having Hollywood comedians create the course. A lot will depend on your own sense of humor, but if you like slapstick style and goofy humor, Improv Traffic School is a good option. I personally find the course to be amusing with their funny jokes, videos, and even a few games thrown in.
Fortunately, Improv Traffic School is one of the few online driving schools left to offer 24/7 customer support. The entire point of taking an adult drivers ed course online is flexibility, so having support available when you need it (typically not regular business hours) is important. It’s nice to see Improv Traffic School sticking with this, even in 2023 as other schools are cutting corners on their customer support. #4: iDriveSafely
iDriveSafely is another great option to consider if you live in the states of Texas or Illinois. These guys have existed for over 25 years and have also had millions of students go through their driving school programs. They offer traffic school, defensive driving, teen drivers ed, and yes, Adult drivers ed.
Their adult drivers ed course is a condensed version of their teen drivers ed program. This course is put together really well with a fun animated cast of instructors. Your instructors through this program will consist of an air freshener, a hula girl on the dashboard, a bumper sticker, etc. By the end of the course, I was actually sad to see them go!
I do think iDriveSafely could use a bit of an update. As of 2023, the course content is still solid, but it just “feels” outdated. For example, the videos are played in square-shaped windows instead of the nice rectangular shape we are used to these days. The animated video quality in terms of graphics also looks like it was produced 10 years ago, which it probably was. However, the course content is still put together very well, in a fun way, and nothing is so outdated that it will cause you to fail your driving test. I just think the platform could use some updating.
In the end, iDriveSafely is a course I would still recommend. They don’t offer 24/7/365 customer service, but they do have extended customer support hours. If you’d like to learn more about iDriveSafely, check out this more detailed iDriveSafely review.

Any of the 4 online adult drivers ed courses listed will work as long as they are approved in your state. I suggest you check each of them out on your own, and combined with the reviews here, you should be able to make an informed decision.
If these choices are not right for you, another adult drivers ed course online can provide the same type of experience. Just do your homework and check their licensing and accreditation.
What’s New With Adult Drivers Ed Courses Online In 2023?
Compared to last year, not a whole lot has changed with online drivers ed courses in 2023. The state of New York will be approving online drivers ed for teens and adults in the summer of 2023, so this will be a big way online driving schools expand.
It’s looking like the state of California may also see some changes in how online traffic schools operate. There are now thousands of providers in California, which the state wants to condense as there are a ton of poor quality courses that are considered to be state-approved. The details are still being worked out, but changes are definitely coming.
Other improvements in 2023 include more mobile-friendliness. It looks like more online driving schools are adding mobile apps that you will be able to download. In my experience, these mobile apps work much better than taking your drivers ed course from a mobile browser.
Other than that, most of the adult drivers ed courses in 2023 are about the same as they were last year. If you’ve received recommendations from a friend or family member that suggested a course they took a year or two ago, you can still trust that recommendation.
I hope this guide to finding the best adult drivers ed course online was helpful and remember to drive safely!
