Florida Online TLSAE Course Provider List

As a former driving instructor, creator of various online driver training programs, and a driving safety advocate, I’m often asked about my opinions of various online drivers education programs.

While I have written many reviews and listed my recommended courses on several other pages of this site, I decided to create a page specifically covering the various Florida Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education Providers.

Also, just to clarify, Florida Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education is Florida’s fancy term for Driver’s Ed.

I have posted the full list of certified Florida TLSAE Course Providers below, but before I just give you a list, I also wanted to share some of my personal opinions and recommendations on who, exactly, you should sign up for.

What Is The BEST Florida TLSAE Course To Sign Up For?

For those of you who just want a quick answer from someone knowledgeable in this industry, my top recommendation without any question is this online Florida certified TLSAE course.

That course will set you back a whopping 20 bucks, but don’t let the price fool you. It is hands down the best online driver’s education course I’ve ever seen, especially for the state of Florida.

Usually, I like to recommend TLSAE courses that have been around for a long time, but Aceable is actually one of the newcomers to the industry. With an initial $5,000,000 in investor funding, they put together the most advanced and highest quality course available.

The company just received another $3,000,000 in additional funding, so you can bet that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Here’s a fun little commercial they made about their TLSAE course…

I don’t want this to turn into some big sales pitch, so let me just say that they are superior in nearly every way from customer service to the quality of training to the functionality on different devices to retention rates by students, etc.

I highly recommend you check them out using this link in order to get the best possible pricing.

How To Take The Florida Online TLSAE Course FOR FREE!

Within the full list of online Florida TLSAE courses, there is one gem that you might miss. Did you know there is a FREE option? While I do NOT recommend the free course (I’ll get into why a bit later), this is a fantastic option for those who are in a financial bind. The Florida state government has selected a program called the Florida Virtual School to be a free option for TLSAE students. Pretty cool!

Why I Don’t Recommend The FREE TLSAE Course: It is really enticing to sign up for Florida Virtual School since their price can’t be beaten. However, I find that it is far more important to provide teens with the absolute best training available, period. Driving a vehicle is the most dangerous activity we perform on a daily basis and most of us formed our good and bad driving habits early on. The cost of a far superior course like this one is only $20, making it very financially obtainable for just about everyone. I will always recommend the best course over the cheapest one.

The free course has some huge disadvantages as well. For starters, the free TLSAE course takes 14 to 16 weeks to complete, which is just crazy, compared to the paid courses which can be completed in under one week. You might think that means there is much more content in the free course, but you would be mistaken. The course material through Aceable, for example, is far superior with a 99% pass rate and takes much less time to complete. Forcing a student to learn material over a 3 to 4 month period makes no sense at all and actually REDUCES retention rates.

For this, and many other reasons, I will continue to recommend paid courses over the free TLSAE option in Florida.

What About Taking TLSAE In A Classroom?

The VAST majority of driving students in Florida sign up for an online TLSAE course instead of taking the course in a classroom setting. All students learn differently and I would never say that taking the Florida TLSAE course online is the best option for everyone. However, I do think the online coursework is superior to classrooms for a few different reasons…

Students Can Study At Their Own Pace – Unlike classroom settings where students are forced to attend at certain times and complete coursework before certain deadlines, an online TLSAE course allows a ton of flexibility. Students are able to learn on their time and when they want to. Have a big test to study for tomorrow? No problem. Can you concentrate due to the big school dance coming up? No need to request an extension. Feel like getting some TLSAE coursework done? You can log in or out anytime, from any device, whenever you want, 24/7/365.

Student Retention Is Fantastic – For us old hags, the idea of “online classrooms” seems so foreign. But for today’s teens, it’s nothing unusual at all. In fact, for many subjects, teens actually retain more information with online coursework. Let’s face it, learning about the rules of the road and how to read traffic signs isn’t all that exciting. By taking the coursework online, students are forced to interact, take quizzes to ensure they are understanding the material, and get their information through a variety of ways such as videos, animations, text, images, audio, etc. Tracking systems can also help show students their own individual strengths and weaknesses, so they know what to pay special attention to. And of course, most online TLSAE courses will come with parent resources and course progress monitoring as well.

Guaranteed & Cost-Effective – As I showed you above, you can take an online TLSAE course for FREE in Florida, but even if you pay for a premium course such as Aceable, you’re looking at maybe 20 bucks. Not only that, but they have a 99% pass rate and guarantee your satisfaction in the course. Very few classroom-based TLSAE courses will be able to offer you that.

While these are all reasons I think an online TLSAE course is the best option in Florida, some students do need the structure of a classroom-based course and a real human-being to ask questions to. So again, this is a personal decision that has to be made on an individual basis, but for most, I think an online course is the best way to go.

Florida Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) Course FAQs

Who is required to take the Florida TLSAE course?

Any resident of Florida who wants to obtain a Florida driver’s license is required to take this course to get a learner’s permit and/or a driver’s license. However, Florida courts can order experienced drivers to take the course as well.

Also, take note that the course needs to be approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) – refer to the list provided above.

Can I finish the course in one day if I take it online?

Sure, if you have the time and you want to get it done as soon as possible, you can complete the course in one sitting.

The TLSAE course can be completed in 4 hours, but of course, it will depend on your pacing.

Within those four hours, you’ll have lessons on different topics related to drugs and alcohol, how it affects your body, and their impact on your driving ability.

If you can’t finish it in one day, don’t worry, most online TLSAE courses have a progress tracker. This means that you can stop anytime, and resume where you left off anytime.

What are the topics covered in a Florida TLSAE Course?

The 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course is all about the different Florida traffic laws governing the use of drugs and alcohol while driving. But more importantly, it also touches on the harmful effects of alcohol and illicit drugs usage on your mind and body, and its impact on your diving.

Every new driver in Florida must take this course as a requirement in getting their learner’s permit (and/or driver’s license). But do note that there are instances that Florida courts can order experienced drivers to take the course, too.

Is the Florida Drug and Alcohol Course the same as the TLSAE course?

Yes, these are the same course. In some instances, it may also be referred to as the DATA Course, wherein DATA stands for Drug Alcohol Traffic Awareness, and as the DATE Course, wherein DATE stands for Drug Alcohol Traffic Education.
