Courses To Get Your Florida Driving Permit Online

Courses To Get Your Florida Driving Permit Online

Getting your Florida driving permit online is easy. There are several online drivers ed courses the state of Florida has approved for home study. While I haven’t been able to review all of the courses (I run this website by myself), I went through the most popular ones and performed some reviews on them. You might be wondering, “who the heck is this guy to review courses?” Well, my name is Mike and I’m a certified driving instructor and former long-haul truck driver with a perfect safety rating. In short, I have a passion for driving. I love everything about it. As such, I also have a love for driving safety. Going through these online permit courses and driving schools is not only fun, but it helps weed out the poor-quality schools.

Are Online Courses Sufficient For Learning About Safe Driving?

As a driving instructor, I can certainly give the “green light” to online drivers ed courses. In the state of Florida, they allow students to basically study for the driving permit online. The reason they allow this is because for the most part, studying for the permit test is boring. You’re learning rules, regulations, laws, etc. The reason an online course is so effective is that the entire course is interactive. Some parts have fun games to go along with the material, there is embedded video, interactive quizzes, and of course the traditional reading. Getting a driving permit online is actually a great way to go because the information is taught in such a variety of ways. Studying for and passing the permit exam is only the beginning of their driver training. In my opinion, even students who went through a classroom-based course should also take an online course. Seeing as though car accidents are the #1 cause of death for teens, the small expense of an online course isn’t that much.

How Do I Know Which Online Drivers Ed Course Is Best For Florida?

I have my own recommendations you can check out below, but in general, you want to make sure the school is certified by the Florida DMV, otherwise, you’re just wasting your time. Under my two recommendations, I list ALL of the approved online permit courses for Florida.

However, just because they’ve been approved doesn’t mean they are good. Just like any other driver’s ed school, these are private companies and some are better than others. Look for an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Make sure the company has been around for a while (at least 5 years or so) with a proven track record.

Check out their homepage and sales pages – are they high quality? If not, the rest of the course probably isn’t, either. Those are just a few things to look for.

My Florida Driving Permit Online Course Recommendations

The 3 schools below are the best ones I could find. If for whatever reason you don’t want to go with either of them, check the full list of approved online driver’s ed courses for Florida. You can find the full list under my recommendations. Good luck and drive safe!!

1: Aceable Online Driver’s Ed

Aceable Drivers Ed

We have a new top pick! Aceable’s online driver’s ed course is probably the highest quality online driver’s ed program ever. Not just in the state of Florida, but everywhere it is certified. Aceable is actually one of the more recent online driver’s ed courses to hit the market. The company is only a couple of years old, but they are absolutely fantastic. In fact, they were just recently approved for an additional $5,000,000 in investor funding so they can make even more improvements to an already great course.

There are many other reasons I recommend Aceable as a top choice though. As an example, when Aceable found out I reviewed their course, they contacted me and gave me a special customer service number just for my site visitors (by the way, that number is 844-685-8458). They said if anyone ever has any issues to have them call this special number and they will be taken care of. To date, I haven’t received even one complaint about Aceable

It is difficult to explain exactly why this course is my favorite online driver’s ed program. The other courses I list aren’t bad by any means, but it’s like the difference between driving a Ford and a Lexus. Aceable is the most up-to-date and most high-quality course I’ve ever seen and they charge the same or less than everyone else. This is hands down my top pick. 2. iDriveSafely Teen Drivers Course

iDriveSafely

The iDriveSafely teen drivers education program is quite clearly the “authority” online driving school. What I personally like most is how they include so many resources for parents. Learning how to drive is a team effort and parents are the main driving instructors. Sure, most parents have been driving for decades (sorry if that makes you sound like an old mom and dad!), but teaching others how to drive can be difficult and frustrating, especially when failures in communication happen. iDriveSafely helps to eliminate those problems before it even starts, thanks to the resources they provide parents with.

As for the students? Well, this is one of the most interactive courses you’ll find. Just when the reading starts to get boring, there’s a video to watch, a game to play, or a quiz to take. Plus, you can start and stop the course whenever you want. You can also go back and review sections you’re having trouble with and they even throw in 50 practice test questions to help you prepare for the actual permit exam.

Finally, they have a fantastic reputation. More than 4.5 million people have used iDriveSafely and they have still been able to maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Learning can be boring at times, especially when studying rules and regulations, but this course is the best at teaching the material in engaging ways that stick. It gets my highest recommendation easily. Check out the full iDriveSafely Online Drivers Ed review here

So if you want to “try before you buy” this is a great option.

Florida Learner’s Permit FAQs

What are the requirements to get a driver’s learner’s permit in Florida?

To be eligible to apply for a learner’s permit (or a learner’s license) in Florida, an applicant must be at least 15 to 17 years old. They must also complete an approved drug and alcohol course, which is around 4 hours (also known as Drug, Alcohol and Traffic Awareness (DATA) course or Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE), and provide the documents required by the state. These documents include the following:

  • Any proof of identification
  • Your Social Security number
  • At least 2 proofs of your residency in the state
  • FLHSMV parent proctoring and consent form, if applicable

Once completed, you can then take your vision and hearing tests and pass the written exam to obtain your learner’s license.

Who is required to take the Drug and Alcohol Course in Florida?

The state of Florida requires all first-time drivers to complete this 4-hour course that focuses on all drug and alcohol-related traffic laws in the state and the dangers of driving while under the influence. You can take this course online so long as the course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), such as the one offered by Aceable (Check here). Note that most online course providers will be reporting your course completion directly to the FLHSMV electronically.

What are the examples of proof of address that the FLHSMV will accept?

You can choose from a list of acceptable documents available on the FLHSMV website as proof of your address. Examples include any billing statement that you received by mail in your name. Or you can provide your school transcript as long as it’s from the current school year.

If for some reason you are unable to provide two forms of acceptable documents, you can fill out a Certification of Address form. This allows you to present the second proof of address in the name of your parent, a legal guardian, or the person you are living with.
